| "The The Good Bad, and The Ugly" |
|
|
by Carl (from Orlando) December 2007 - The Good… Full Hook-Ups, 10’X20’ Concrete slabs, right on the Indian River Intracoastal Waterway, no big list of rules (I hate “management by signs”). No extra “Per Person” charges and plenty of boat parking. Set in a gorgeous area with a wonderful small town, many restaurants of all flavors, and unbelievable beaches very close by.
The Bad… Looks like it was a wonderful campground about twenty years ago. Now, it is very neglected. No picnic tables, no pool, no recreation hall/room, no camp store, and no credit cards accepted. That’s a very long list of missing amenities. The park is situated between a busy road and a railroad track where loud trains roar through at all hours of the day and night. Between the loud motorcycles on the road and the trains, there is little quiet time.
When I pulled in at 7:00pm, the office sign stated hours of 9am to 12pm… three hours! There was a cell phone number and an older woman answered. I had already looked around when I pulled into the property and noticed that about two-thirds of the place was empty, so I was surprised to hear the woman reluctant for my business when I called. She said that they “don’t park trailers at night” for fear of their utilities being run over. When I mentioned that I wanted to stay for a week, then the couple decided to come out and help me. This place needs money very badly, so I could hardly believe them turning us away. Maybe they were trying to do us a favor?
The Ugly… By far, the bathrooms are the worst I’ve seen in twenty years of camping. There are broken toilets and showers in both the men’s and women’s rooms. The restrooms were cleaned one time the whole week we were there. My wife and daughter went to use the bathroom and instead of toilet paper, there were paper towels! The washer and dryers on property do not work properly; we had to finish up our laundry in the local coin-op laundry. Derelict mobile homes were on property.
Price… $40 per night, $240 per week, $650 monthly. Seemed pretty steep for such a run down old campground. The price should have been around $25 or less. I don’t think this place is going to be around for very much longer or it will be sold to new owners.
So why did we stay a week? Fair question… Three reasons, first of all, we checked in at 7:00pm in December, so it was dark outside and we were tired. Also, I’ve been camping for a long time and I like campgrounds with character. I really don’t like the “RV parking lots” that have all the RV’s lined up in a row with no trees and no room for my kids to play. At night, I thought we were in a decent place and in the morning after all our unpacking… well; we were there to stay. Lastly, the location on the water and proximity to the small town is the only thing going for this place. Half way through the week, we regretted making the decision to stay, we should have moved on. There are two other campgrounds in the area that probably deserve the business more.
