October 2007 - Panera Bread has blossomed into one of the more popular new franchises in recent years. The upscale bakery/sandwich shop caters to those who want more than fast food but don't have time to wait long.
Their Louisville location is located along a busy thoroughfare on the north end of town. We visited on a Monday evening along with a small sampling of like-minded patrons.
Panera is well-known for it's grilled sandwiches. I ordered the chicken pomodoro. Consisting of smoked, pulled white-meat chicken, fresh mozzarella, fresh basil & vine-ripened Pomodoro sauce, the sandwich was served on Sesame Semolina bread. Most Panera sandwiches are served with one simple side, such as the chips I ordered. The sandwich was piping hot, a bit on the small side but quite good. Rarely do Panera's sandwiches disappoint. Their "cafe" menu includes several types--from veggie to roast beef, all served with unique accompaniments which give them a unique taste--much different than your local sub shop chain.
Panera also offers soups which are quite good and an array of desserts and muffins, all fresh-baked.
The only downside to Panera is the price. For what is essentially a sandwich meal, it can be a strain on the budget. My sandwich, along with chips and a fountain drink, came to $8.29. For that price, one would expect a larger sandwich. I left the table feeling a bit hungry. One pays for the atmosphere, I suspect, which is quite warm and inviting and certainly a treat for the olfactory senses.
