"Shouldn't call this rafting"
by Kendal (from Paris, KY)
July 2007 - I recently had the chance to visit Whitley City for a rafting trip. My 19-year-old nephew, my brother-in-law and my 60-year-old father drove up from Tennessee last weekend to meet me to go rafting. We’d read on their website that because of the low levels of Lake Cumberland this was the best rafting in 25 years. We’d signed up for a 5-hour trip perfect for beginners. That’s how it was advertised. What we ended up with was a nightmare. We "rafted" for a few miles. In those three hours we saw maybe two minute of white water. The guide called the two areas that resembled rapids "two and a halfs" Then because of the low levels of water we could not be towed in or brought in by boat as the outfitter had done in previous years. I completely understand the company’s need to continue despite low water levels. My only request is that they be honest with rafters. I would’ve never signed my father up for this misadventure if I’d known it would turn out to be almost 9 hours in sweltering heat, most of the time spent just paddling excessively to the pick-up point. The owner spent plenty of time going over the safety measures and all the rules and regulations, but gave no hint what the 8 boats were about to experience. I’ve been a white-water rafter for 15 years. I’ve rafted in multiple states. This was the first and now last time in Kentucky. Tough times call for tough measures, but businesses shouldn’t be deceptive and risk the health of their customers because of the water levels. It leaves everyone in hot water.
