December 2007 - Fuddruckers is a popular choice for those who love high-end hamburgers. As a fan of the chain, we were pleasantly surprised to find one in the Detroit airport (concourse C). Obviously smaller than the stand-alone restaurants, the airport location did deliver on Fuddruckers basic premise—a quality “dress it yourself” burger with homemade fries and other add-ons.
It’s not a fast food operation. You select from one of several burger types (regular, with bacon, triple cheese, etc) or chicken sandwiches, place your order and they’ll call you when the meal is ready. Fresh made, sizable burgers seasoned just right is what you will get.
Fuddruckers is not inexpensive. The cheapest burger at the airport locale runs just under $6, with a meal consisting of fries and a refillable drink costing around $10. Yet there is something irresistible about the taste and this location was busy during a weeknight dinner hour between the Christmas and New Year holidays. There isn’t much seating and the place is tiny in comparison, but you’ll get the same experience once your meat comes off the grill.
Fuddruckers allows patrons to fix their burger at a special station that includes lettuce, tomato, pickles and condiments. The extra work is worth it because the add-ons are always fresh and don’t cost anything additional.
If you have time on a layover (allow about 25-30 minutes from order to the end of your meal), it’s well worth it. And don’t forget the crispy marshmallow treats or browies (you can get them to go).
