"Great Carbo-loading"
7
by David (from Orléans)
July 2007 - Because it’s a long trip to Utica, New York, and the local Boilermaker race each year, I have worried about where to eat after the long drive yet consider my needs for the next morning. For two years now, I have tested the Applebee’s restaurant in the Riverside Center in North Utica. I have decided that this will become a fixture of my Utica adventure.

As a restaurant chain since the ‘80s, Applebee’s has proven themselves. The Utica restaurant is a new outlet yet provides all the service and food you would expect from the dependable chain.

I was dining with three other adult males, all hoping to fill up on calories and fluids after many hours in the car and before the long run awaiting us next morning. We were not disappointed. With the exception of those dinner plates belonging to yours truly, none of the other plates at our table were emptied. The quality and the quantity were too good.

Not speaking for my partners at the table and at the race, I have learned to pace myself well in both eating and running. I finished my plate and went straight on to dessert while my partners watched and talked.

Traditionally, two Italian restaurants in Utica, Babe’s and Carmella’s, have offered free pasta meals to racers the night before the race. Listening to the chatter amongst the staff at our Applebee’s restaurant, it now seems that they too offer pasta specials for the carbo-loading race crowd. So if you attend on the night before the second Sunday in July, bring your race bib and see what you’re offered.
