"Ultimate Sports Bar and Restaurant"

by Robert (from Washington Depot, CT)
November 2007 - As a Red Sox fan (that’s the World Champion! Boston Red Sox, of course), I have always been in that legion of folks called Yankee haters. That’s why I took some good natured ribbing from a friend when I told him we were going to meet my New York based son for a pre-Thanksgiving Day lunch at Mickey Mantle’s Restaurant just south of Central Park.
Formerly owned by the late and great Hall of Famer, Mantle’s is, at least in my mind, the ultimate sports bar experience. It’s usually pretty crowded, but we have never been denied a seat at Mantle’s. We never tell them we are members of “Red Sox Nation,” of course, but I don’t think it would make any difference. They are very comfortable and hospitable in their pin-striped ambience and walls covered with pictures of Yankees, members of other teams (even Red Sox), sports memorabilia, and celebrity likenesses and autographs. The place is so immersed in the sports scene that, in its earlier days it served as the site for many remote broadcasts on sports talk and interview radio stations.
You don’t normally get gourmet food at Mickey’s, but you do get good sports bar fare, including favorites like ribs, steaks, burgers, and its famous chili. The real reason you go there is to soak up the atmosphere. Big screen TV’s are everywhere and it is just about impossible to sit at a table without a view of two or three athletic contests. People all around sip their beer and wine and chow down while enjoying the competition and good conversation.
The wait staff is friendly and they keep things moving. On this day I had a tasty chicken sub that was not too damaging to my diet even though it was surrounded by a big bunch of crunchy fries. My wife had fish and my son had a classic steak and fries meal that was cooked to order. We didn’t have any dessert because of our diets, but there was a nice dessert menu offered. With a couple of glasses of wine and a coke, the bill came to about $100, not bad for three hungry people in mid-town Manhattan.
I think most of all we feel comfortable at Mantle’s, even if it is as Yankee as the Stadium itself. We like the excitement of Manhattan, but Mantle’s offers an oasis in the middle of the holiday hustle and bustle. Anyone who is visiting New York and who would like a thoroughly New York experience should try Mickey Mantle’s Bar and Restaurant. This, of course, is a recommendation that should be doubled as advice to sports fans.
