"New York's oldest pub!!"
7.50
by Lindsay (from Saskatoon)
December 2007 - Established in 1854, McSorley’s Old Ale House is New York City’s oldest pub, staying open during prohibition by serving a near beer. If you go on the weekend there will likely be a line up, but getting through the doors does not guarantee a seat (or possibly even standing room). They only had light or dark house ales available, but both were excellent. When you order a pint the very busy barkeep brings two 250mL glasses, which makes for a lot of empties on the table. They have a full pub menu but, as per the tradition, they will serve cheese and crackers with raw onions at no charge. The place was absolutely packed so the service was a bit slow and it was very crowded, but I think that's part of the charm. What really makes McSorley’s so fascinating is all of the history—from floor to ceiling the walls are plastered with memorabilia dating back to 1854, including pictures and letters from past presidents, actors, and athletes. It truly is something to see!!
