August 2007 - Mackenzie's Grill is located on the city's west side, not far from I-71. The restaurant sits in front of the Holiday Inn Cleveland Airport.
Mackenzie's is built on an Irish pub theme and has a fairly sizable bar area that was busy even on a weekday summer night. While those patrons seemed to be having a good time, the restaurant itself was disappointing to those of us who chose that side of the room.
We were seated fairly quickly but it became apparent that the staff was not prepared to handle several tables at once. Understaffed, we waited ten minutes for someone to take our drink order, but it never happened. We suspected dinner would take an eternity so we chose to leave.
We decided to give the restaurant a second chance by stopping in for breakfast each of the next two mornings. On day one, we ordered the breakfast buffet, which was a simple selection of cereals, muffins, fruits and yogurt along with the requisite coffees and juices. The buffet was OK but nothing more than what one could reasonably expect to receive for free at innumerable hotels which offer a complimentary breakfast. Service was adequate.
The following morning, we decided to order from the menu and chose pancakes and ham. Service was again average and the pancakes were extremely disappointing with a gritty texture that made us long for yesterday's uninspiring continental fare.
While the restaurant may offer an option for those staying at the hotel, it isn't recommended for city guests seeking a memorable meal.
