| "Not worth the drive" |

February 2006 - My sister and I thought we would really enjoy a visit to the Austin zoo. But when we stepped out of the car after a long drive (we felt like we were going to the middle of nowhere), we were disappointed in what we found. The whole zoo was unpaved, so we pushed our strollers all over bumpy gravel lanes. There were no signs or maps telling us how to get to which animals. And the habitats of the animals were nothing more than metal buildings with sheets blowing in the doorways. We felt very sorry for the animals who made their homes there - the environment seemed to suggest that the animals didn't receive the type of care we have come to expect from zoos. Even the choices of animals that were there were not your typical zoo animals (elephants, giraffes, zebras), but were things such as goats and deer instead.
