February 2006 - Stowe Mountain Resort is just up the mountain road from the picturesque New England village of Stowe in Vermont. I learned to snowboard at Stowe in 2006 and while the mountain does not offer the size, favourable conditions or variety of terrain that you'll find in most of the western North American ski resorts, Stowe has plenty of steep challenging terrain and should not be easily dismissed. The east is known for its icy conditions but having spent an entire winter in Stowe, it was not as bad as I had expected and on most days, the weather and the snow was enjoyable. The resort is in the midst of major developments with a new lodge, condos and a gondola going in so a bit of patience might be required for a few years until most of the planned work is finished. Once done, however, it should be an impressive ski resort, if a bit spendy, deserving of its reputation as one of the premier ski resort in the eastern US.
