March 2008 - Looking for a late night supper, we arrived at Penny Lane in Richmond, Virginia with empty stomachs after a long day’s car ride. The pub is inviting as it keeps its doors open to the street. The owner obviously likes soccer as much of the decorations are devoted to English football teams and trivia. The beverage selection is ample. They carry myriad domestic and imported beers and even ciders. The food menu, on the other hand, does not carry many bold selections. We settled for their Big Duke mushroom cheeseburger and a steak salad. The burger was overcooked and very difficult to handle. The steak in the salad was very, very tough. Our selections did not appease our hungry stomachs. Our meals and most mains on the menu ran in the $9 to $15 range before tax and tip. Service was mediocre and the food took an excruciatingly long time to arrive at the table. Penny Lane seems like a good place to drink after dinner somewhere else.
